Meet Dr Caroline Ng'weno

Caroline Ng'weno – Our New Conservation Hero

When Kenya Wildlife Trust was developing plans to merge our two flagship projects into one long-term Mara Predator Conservation Programme, we sought an inspiring and respected Kenyan conservation leader to take the reins at the start of this year.

We didn’t have to search long before discovering Dr Caroline Ng’weno.

“Working in the Mara has always been my dream. When I saw this position, I knew that was it”

- Dr Caroline Ng’weno

Who is Dr Caroline Ng’weno?
An impressive candidate both on paper and in person, Caroline outshone many highly qualified applicants to secure this exciting, competitive role. So, who is Caroline? She is definitely not your average conservationist. She is among an inspiring group of successful women changing the face of conservation in Kenya.

Holding a Ph.D. in Zoology (University of Wyoming, USA), an M.Phil. in Environmental Studies (Moi University, Kenya) and a BSc. in Education Science (Maseno University, Kenya), Caroline has dedicated herself to conservation for over a decade.

Before joining the Kenya Wildlife Trust team, Caroline was part of the team at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia for nine years, developing from Carnivore Programme Officer to Head of Research and Monitoring.

Beyond her professional experience, Caroline has a personal passion for carnivores. Having spent the past 10 years studying predator-prey dynamics and large carnivores, Caroline has a deep understanding of the complex challenges facing conservationists, in both protected areas and human-occupied landscapes.

Why Caroline?
Caroline blends her academic prowess with an infectiously positive outlook. To her, the role of Programme Director is not just a job, it’s a calling. As a dedicated mentor, Caroline is proud to have nurtured many students from Kenyan universities, and her inspiring leadership style shines through as she encourages our Mara-based team to fulfil their potential.

Caroline has brought an exciting new perspective and a fantastic new energy to Kenya Wildlife Trust. We are delighted to celebrate Caroline as a true Kenyan conservation hero, at a time when our Mara Predator Conservation Programme takes off into an exciting new era. An accomplished scientist, a team player, a leader, a mentor, a manager and a passionate conservationist, Dr Caroline Ng’weno is without doubt the best pilot that we could have.
